The focus of our safety program is driven by ensuring that all employees are trained for the specific tasks they perform. To that end, we offer an extensive training program that goes beyond standard training practices as well as a Safety Management System and a comprehensive HSE Policy to which all employees must adhere. In addition, we have empowered all our team members with Stop Work Authority.

When it comes to safety, we are very proactive. We conduct regular audits to identify and correct potential problems. In addition, we have developed a comprehensive safety manual, conduct regular maintenance on all equipment to ensure safe operation and require all employees to undergo drug screenings.

HSE Policy

It is the policy of Associated Terminals to conduct activities which:

  • Ensure that health, safety, security, and environmental (HSSE) matters are at the core of all business objectives.
  • Consider first the health, safety, and security of employees, contractors, and third parties who may be affected.
  • Protect the environment, prevent pollution, and seek improvements in the efficient use of natural resources.

  • Protect the security of employees, facilities, and assets.
  • Comply with all applicable laws under which the Company is operating.

BEHAVIORAL OBSERVATION AND ONSITE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM (BOOM)

BOOM stands for Behavioral Observation and Onsite Management Program. The main objectives of the BOOM program are to learn how to practice safety awareness and recognize and eliminate at-risk behaviors, which are the major cause of workplace injuries.

The program consists of self-study workbooks, group discussion meetings and on-the-job field activities. These components are designed to introduce, teach and reinforce the basic BOOM safety concepts.

These concepts are based on the following safety principles:

  • All injuries and occupational illnesses can be prevented.
  • Safety is Everyone’s responsibility.
  • Management as well as all employees are directly accountable for preventing injuries and occupational illnesses.
  • Safety is a condition of employment.
  • Training is an essential element for safe workplaces.
  • Safety Audits must be conducted.
  • Safe work practices should be reinforced and all at-risk behaviors and unsafe conditions must be corrected promptly.
  • It is essential to investigate injuries and occupational illnesses as well as incidents with the potential for injury.
  • Safety off the job is an important element of our overall safety effort.
  • Preventing injuries and occupational illnesses is good business.
  • People are the most critical element in the success of a safety and health program.
  • All operating exposures can be reasonably safeguarded.

The target audience for BOOM is all employees, regardless of their background in safety, their job titles, or their positions within the organization. Because BOOM builds safety awareness among employees and into every employee’s job, it can be applied in virtually any work environment.

FOCUS 12 Initiative

Through the Focus 12 initiative, Associated Terminals reminds all of our team of the importance of their personal safety while performing any task. It is with this focus that greater milestones can be achieved. This focus and commitment to safety and overall performance is not only restricted to the 12 hours at work, but also to decisions made while off the job site.

As part of this commitment, each team member has pledged:

  • That Safety is a condition of employment.
  • To perform every task as safely as possible, planning all jobs and considering all hazards prior to acting.
  • To take the time to work safely no matter how long the job takes to complete.
  • To eliminate all hazards that can be controlled and report to supervision those that cannot be personally addressed.
  • To STOP all work that is not understood or felt to be unsafe to perform until the team member is comfortable to complete the job.
  • To confront co-workers who are not performing safely.
  • To be responsible for personal safety.
  • To place individual safety and the personal safety of others before production and operational needs.
  • To pay attention to and incorporate all training into daily activities.
  • To be a Safety Leader in every area of the job.
  • To press supervision for solutions related to unsafe conditions.
  • To work safely, every day, second by second, hour by hour, task by task, giving a safe and productive 12 hours.

THE OTHER 12

Employee safety does not end once the workday is over. Through the Other 12 campaign, Associated reminds employees of the importance of incorporating personal safety when not at work. Utilizing reminders related to key times of the year such as the beginning of school, hunting season and holiday periods, Associated provides reminders of personal safety topics throughout the year while also focusing on human interest stories related to our team members and their families.

SEE SOMETHING. DO SOMETHING.

See Something. Do Something. is a safety campaign that raises awareness of the unsafe behaviors and conditions that lead to incidents and stresses the importance of reacting to those unsafe behaviors and conditions.

Informed, alert employees play a critical role in keeping every crew member safe. Associated Terminals is committed to strengthening the safety culture by continuously promoting opportunities to not only speak up but to do something to address unsafe behaviors and conditions. “See Something. Do Something” expands on the philosophies of Focus 12, Stop Work Authority and the BOOM program. Together, these programs empower the employee to react when unsafe behaviors and conditions are observed.
