Cargo shed will provide shippers with additional 40,000 sq. ft. of storage
Officials from the Port of South Louisiana (POSL) and Associated Terminals recently met at Globalplex to break ground on a new 40,000 square foot transit storage facility in Reserve, LA. This building will significantly expand storage for Associated's customers at the POSL.
The new cargo facility is strategically placed at the southeast corner of the industrial park adjacent to the general cargo dock and its access bridge. "The Port of South Louisiana planned this transit shed based on the needs of its customers," said Joel Chaisson, Executive Director. "The site was selected to afford quick and easy access between the dock and storage," he added.
The building structure consists of a pile-supported floor with large load capacity and a steel roof that can withstand hurricane force winds. Allowance was made in the design for installation of future conveyors connecting to the river dock and nearby railroad tracks. The facility is equipped with truck ramps into the building and external truck docks for the efficient loading and unloading of cargoes.
Building layout and location will permit future expansion of the facility to triple its current size. The facility was planned and designed by URS Corporation in close cooperation with the Port of South Louisiana and Associated Terminals. Construction completion is slated for June 2009.
Associated Terminals is the exclusive stevedore and terminal operator at the POSL's Globalplex Intermodal facility. This complex is comprised of a 660 ft. long by 204 ft. wide deep draft cargo dock, serviced by two Manitowoc 2250 gantry cranes. The terminal currently offers 166,000 sq. ft. of covered storage and 177,000 sq. ft. of paved open lay down area.
The Port of South Louisiana is a 54-mile port district on the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge encompassing St. Charles, St. John and St. James parishes. The POSL is the largest tonnage port in the Western Hemisphere and accounts for over 50% of all Louisiana imports/exports.
